Meet the veterinarians

About Dr. Marci Scarano

I grew up on Long Island and moved to the lower Hudson Valley in 2005 where I immediately fell in love with the apple orchards, dairy farms, and mountains and lakes, which are so warm and welcoming. I am greeted with smiles and “hellos” from strangers everywhere I go. Though they are only separated by 75 miles, the two areas are worlds apart.

I have wanted to be a veterinarian from early childhood, but wasn’t sure I could handle the difficult emotions that come with the career. After briefly studying art and design, I worked at an animal shelter and this is when I knew I belonged in the field. I graduated from Ross University, on the island of St. Kitts and after veterinary school, resumed work at the animal shelter. I would probably still be there if I didn't make a move to Orange County along the way. After moving, I worked at a general practice for 15 years. I really cherished the relationships I built with the pets I cared for and their owners. An incredible bond is established when a family trusts you to ensure the well being of their loved one.

Saying goodbye to my beloved dog, Romeo, was the hardest decision I have ever made. He was terrified of car rides, and I couldn't bear for his last moments to be stressful, so I chose to euthanize him in my living room, where he could relax in a familiar environment. His transition over the rainbow bridge was the most peaceful experience, and as difficult as it was for me, I knew it was right for him. Being able to help pets and their families in the comfort of their own homes is truly a gift. The decreased stress, familiar environment, and having family by their side is all anyone could want for their pet, while taking away their pain and suffering.

When I am not helping pets and their families, I love to crochet dolls. I started crocheting in veterinary school because there wasn’t much to do on St. Kitts, aside from going to the beach. I sometimes sell my dolls at craft fairs, which is fun. I also enjoy live music, especially indie rock, and have even traveled to Europe to see my favorite band.
