Meet the veterinarians
About Dr. Claude Woodard
Growing up on a farm in Manhattan, Kansas, I helped take care of our animals and always felt a calling to the veterinary field. I saw how important our local veterinarian was to the health and wellbeing of our cattle, horses, and pets, and that made me want to care for animals, too.
I attended veterinary school at Kansas State University and have been privileged to practice many facets of veterinary medicine since receiving my degree. While I have a deep love and respect for all animals, I especially enjoy caring for dogs and cats. Pets enrich the lives of everyone who loves them, and the bond they share with people is incredibly life-affirming. Being able to share in that joy and witness that special relationship is such a pleasure.
I’ve outlived many of my pets over the years, and it never gets any easier to say goodbye to beloved family members. A pet who has slept next to you for more than 20 years is a part of you, and the sadness of their loss can never be completely healed. No matter where I work— a pasture, Middle Eastern desert, or clinic—my veterinary career continues to fulfill my dreams and allows me to create new goals for myself.
I’ve had many experiences that have shaped my ideas about end-of-life care. I spent time providing nursing care to sailors during wartime as a Navy corpsman, and the suffering I witnessed increased my compassion. I also lost my daughter, Mary Catherine, who was born incredibly disabled.
As a veterinarian and pet owner, I’ve come to realize that families and pets are much more comfortable saying goodbye in a familiar place, and my goal for providing in-home end-of-life services is to make the process easier for everyone. I believe the best way to ensure a peaceful passing for pets is to let them do so in a nurturing home environment, surrounded by the people they love.
When I'm not caring for other people's pets, I enjoy spending time with my own furry family members, Lulu and Miss Kitty. I also have six city chickens who keep me entertained and produce beautiful brown eggs. I'm an avid fisherman and enjoy boating and other water sports, as well as jewelry design, silversmithing, and gardening.
